Call for Participants: “Teaching the Gothic 2,” Workshop on Thursday, August 1st, from 4:15 to 5:30 P.M.
We are excited to invite you to apply for the Teaching the Gothic 2: Workshop, organized by postgraduate representatives as a companion to the “Teaching the Gothic 1” panel. The workshop is divided into two interactive segments, as follows:
Segment 1: Presentations (20-25 minutes)
The four selected presenters will share various assignments implemented when teaching Gothic literature and culture or integrating Gothic studies into their fields. These assignments range from major projects to smaller, innovative, and creative projects to class activities to engaging reading exercises. Each presenter will have 5-7 minutes to talk, focusing on:
- Learning objectives
- Assignment descriptions
- Procedures
- Student achievements and challenges
Instead of formal presentations, presenters will talk casually about one class assignment they designed for their classes. Presenters are not required to prepare presentation slides or papers; instead, they will need to copy the learning objective, assignment description, and procedure from their syllabus and paste that information into a Google slide by the day before the workshop takes place. Selected presenters will receive a link to a Google slide.
Segment 2: Collaborative Workshop (50-55 minutes)
In the second part of the workshop, attendees will break into small groups to collaboratively design one or two assignments for a dream class engaging in Gothic studies. This workshop will provide an opportunity to exchange ideas and develop assignments that reflect the group’s pedagogical philosophy concerning various issues, including the Anthropocene, post-pandemic realities, political polarization, extreme inequality, dehumanization, and more.
If you are interested in sharing your class assignment as a presenter, please email jongkeyong.kim@tcu.edu by July 19th at 5 p.m. CST. Write “Teaching the Gothic 2 Speaker” in the subject line of your email.
Thank you for your consideration. We look forward to an enriching and collaborative discussion.
